What you can expect at your first visit

We welcome each new patient to our clinic with a Fear Free Consultation.

This is a brief 15-20 minute appointment with our staff and Dr. Delabar to learn more about your pet and to assess the fear, anxiety, and stress (referred to as FAS from this point on) your pet may be experiencing in the veterinary setting.

We will offer your dog or cat some treats, record their weight, and see how they respond when we interact with them. Throughout this process, our staff assess the FAS levels to ensure even low levels signs of fear and anxiety are identified and discussed. This is typically an observational examination, especially for patients with a higher FAS level.

Dr. Delabar prescribes anxiety medications, or pre-visit pharmaceuticals (often referred to as PVPs), to help reduce their stress for future visits. After this initial assessment, a follow up visit is scheduled to carry out the comprehensive physical exam and any procedures or care needed at that time.

While there is no guarantee that PVPs will completely alleviate your pet’s fear and stress, most families recognize the positive results from administering the medications when their pet returns more relaxed for their follow up visit. And if that is not the case, we adjust the treatment plan accordingly to meet the needs of each individual patient.
